Hi you all, How was your day ? I had a very good day! I thought today I would show you a hand bag I made about 7 years ago. When I started to sew, when I was 15 years old, I wanted to make everything. I had no teacher. My Mother did not sew or anyone else that I knew. So right from the start I was on my own. So I would study something I wanted to make and study it and study it. Then I would measure and measure. Than cut it out and sew it together. I can tell you I did not all ways end up with something I could wear! I did learn to sew and without a pattern. I started making hand bags in 84 and I have not bought a hand bag or wallet since.
That looks like a pumpkin doesn't it ? It is a Seminole squash. Tom got it at the framer's market on Saturday last. We have saved the seeds and we are going to plant them next spring.
The farmer that grows them said they are very easy to grow, they don't seem to have any bug problems and are drought tolerant. What more can you ask for ? We had it for dinner Sunday night and it was very good.
Well my friends we have come to the end of another post. I hope I did not bore you. Leave a comment and come back soon.

What an amazing talent to teach yourself how to sew, and without a pattern! You should feel very proud! We're proud of Moma when she stitches up our stuffies (though we think she may have some other hidden sewing talents that she's saving as a surprise for someday!)
ReplyDeleteNow about that Seminole squash. Hmmmm. (Looks like it might be fun to play with! It's sort of Mango sized!) Did you bake it, like a winter squash??? Nom Nom Nom. We love ALL veggies.
See you soon,

Thats great that you taught yourself to sew. My mom sews and learned in 7th grade and just kinda went from there. She makes all my clothes and my Halloween and Christmas costumes. She sews gifts for people for Christmas too.
ReplyDeleteThe squash looks like the round balls that were in my house. I am glad that you guys enjoyed it.

I love the purse. I love to sew, but I did take a class in high school and a few since then. How wonderful to do it on your own. I like the info about the squash. My family loves squash.

Love your bag, Fern. I like the pattern on it. Did you make the table decoration under the squash too? Blue is one of my favorite colors.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to your question the other day, my husband had been a cook for many years but is now in truck driving school because the restaurant business is so slow now.

Oh yah, I am not mad, but you missed me cuz I wasnt online much this weekend due to doing some squirrel patrol and then being thrown into the pile of leaves, BOL The kids were throwing leaves on me too, it was rough!!
ReplyDelete2 more grandkids spent the night Sunday night, so I had my paws full with them plus the 2 that live with us and Mom had to work today,so I was all day with 4 kids!!!
But now, we are back to normal and have our semi quite house again.

Lovely quilt that Seminole squash is sitting on - do you always treat your veggies so well? Well done on the sewing - D loves to sew - but she takes classes and has a helpful set of DVDs!!! Otherwise it could all end in tears! I once was sitting under her work table and heard her screaming and she threw fabric all over the place - it was not a pretty sight and I ended up with some interfacing stuck to my face!
ReplyDeleteLots of licks

Just have took time to read down your blog posts. Very interesting pics and stories. I luv the Celtic bag. Or at least the symbol looks Celtic to me. I collect items w/celtic symbols. I like your cat Happy but I wouldn't like getting up at 2.00am to feed her. You are a GOOD mom. You can add yourself to my followers and I think my most recent post will come up on your profile page. I would like to know how to get the blog roll too. I'll try to find out. I use my daughters laptop computer. The squash looks yummy and I thinky you have done an excellant job in teaching yourself to sew.Take care and hugs from me and slobbery kisses from Teddy & Louie to you and Bambi & Happy.
Hi Fern,
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful handbag - it reminds me of the Scottie one from my post a few days back.
Great quilt under the squash - and the squash looks yummy - when we went out for dinner for our anniversary this weekend, I had stuffed squash - it was so good.

Hi Fern,
ReplyDeleteI really like the pocketbook. Great job on the design. That is some squash. What a colorful garden you will have next year. I have been sewing since I was very young. My grandmother had 6 daughters. My mom was the youngest. My grandmother never had time to teach her daughters to sew but she did teach the granddaughters. Then I took 4 years of home economics in high school. I had a fabulous teacher too. This time of year I enjoy crocheting.
