I wish I didn't have to write this post

How do I start???  What do I say???  Zoie !!!!  ZOIE!!!!!!  Zoie!!!  I love you!!!!! How am I going to live without you!!!!!!! Maybe I'll stop blogging???  I can't
see well enough to spend even one hour on the computer and yet I have been and it has been real hard on my eye~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  I am losing so many friends b/c I can't see.  I can't hear either.
And now I don't have a dog anymore!!!!  I am not getting another!!!  I am not!!!!  I have had 8 dogs that have lived in this 6 foot fence and the only 2 that ever left the fence was Tinker and Zoie.
Tinker dug out and Zoie jumped the fence.  Zoie had not jumped the fence in a long while.
Wednesday AM after a Tuesday that rained off and on all day long, Zoie woke me up and said she needed to go out.  I let her out and told her to stay home and went to the bathroom and came back to let Zoie back in and no Zoie.  I called her and I called her.  No Zoie!!  I waited about 15 minutes and I called again. No Zoie. I should have gotten dressed and gone out to look for her but I didn't !!!
Zoie had left the fence before and she had gone next door to the empty house,  That house has been empty for years!!  There is a lot of critters living over there. I was hoping that was where she went.
I went back to bed. I was bad!!!!!!!!!!! I should have gotten dressed and gone out to look for her.
When Tom got up to get ready for work still no Zoie!!!  He said he would go next door and find her.  He did and she wasn't there!!! He left for work!  He came back in just a minute and said he would be bringing Zoie home for the last time.  He found her in the 6 lane road out front about a block and a half away. Split wide open. We think a semi hit her.  Why did she go to the road-------- we will never know???  I am devastated!!!  I am heart sick!!!  I can't do anything but cry. I am so SAD sad sad !!!!!
How do I live with myself????? I am so sad!!!

  1. I am so, so sorry to hear about dear Zoie. And having lost beloved pets before I do know who much you are grieving. You are in my thoughts as Zoie romps beyond the bridge and waits for her dear Fern.

  2. Fern, I am really sorry to read about Zoie's untimely passing. It is really unfortunate but you must not blame yourself. You took good care of Zoie and she blossomed under your care. And Zoie appreciates that, I am sure. Take all the time you need to grieve for Zoie as that is how you can begin to heal. Remember all the wonderful memories you had with Zoie..there were many!
Please take good care of yourself, Fern. We'll light a candle in honor of Zoie. Be at peace, little girl. Your time on earth may have been short, but it was filled with lots of love.

  3. Oh Fern! I was so saddened to read this! Your emotions came through in every word of this post! Don't blame yourself for losing her. She may have known that she was ready to go over the Rainbow Bridge but didn't have the heart to tell you. Since it was unusual for her to jump the fence I can only comfort myself in knowing she was ready to say goodbye.

  4. Dear FERN, I am just broken hearted for you! This was not your fault. Zoie must have been CALLED to the Rainbow Bridge for Some REASON that we may never know or understand.
    Run FREE and FAST Zoie.
I am soo sorry for your loss, Fern.
    Sincerely,
    Lana

Please know that I'm thinking about you and sending all my love and comforting thoughts to you at what I know is a sad time for you. Take care, and I hope we can catch up again very soon!!

  8. Fern, I am so sorry for Zoie and you. We humans keep thinking that the animals know better than to go into roads, but they don't.

  12. So very sorry for your loss, Fern. Zoie was a free spirit who had that urge to roam. Please don't blame yourself, you were very good to her. As Frankie said, there must be some reason she is needed across the Rainbow Bridge.

  13. OMG Mitch and Molly asked us to pop over. The likelyhood is even if you had got dressed there would have been nothing you could have done. Zoie as you said probably went critter hunting and had a brilliant chase. It all probably happened very quickly without any pain. Don't be hard on yourself. Fern, you and Tom take care. We are very sad for you both and we send much love. Please keep you blog because reading above you have lovely friends who would miss you. Take a break and heal.
Our love to you both Molly

  15. Oh my gosh Fern,
My heart breaks for you, I am totally speechless!! You loved Zoie and she loved you but yes, she was a free spirit. She was probably on a chase which you could not have stopped. Dont blame yourself, you took the best care of her. Dont stop blogging, we would miss you. Take some time to heal and know that our prayers are being sent up to you for comfort and healing.

    Love

  16. Fern - I'm so very sorry to read this post. Everyone is right - don't blame yourself. It happened for a reason, and we'll probably never really know the answer. You need some time to heal your broken heart. In time I hope Zoie sends you a new doggie to love - only maye not a hunting dog (he he - they tend to follow their noses and it gets them in trouble.) HUGs

  19. Oh Fern, I am so sorry!! I know it is hard not to, but you must not blame yourself. Zoie was a beautiful dog, true to form with her hunting instincts. Something caught her attention. How could you have known? It is not your fault. I wish I had a bandaid for your heart right now. You know exactly where she is right now, she is on the Rainbow Bridge, just playing and waiting until she can see you again. HUGS

  20. Oh Fern I am so so sorry that you lost your sweet Zoey and in this manner too. Please dont beat yourself up beacuse Zoey must have been needed at the bridge.. Sending love.. Hugs Carol and GJ xx

  21. Dear Fern, what could you have done? If Zoie was on the hunt, she would have been too focused to hear you calling or to come home. And in your condition, you wouldn't have been able to chase and catch her. So have a good cry then let it go. Most of all, be kind to yourself. A big hug coming your way X

  22. Oh Fern, I am so sorry. What a tragedy. I wish I could think of something that would make it easier for you. Please try to remember Zoie isn't in any pain, her spirit is flying free, you are the one with all the pain. Take care of yourself. Big Hugs from Helen and the Sheltie boys, Beckett and Keltic.

  23. Oh dear Fern, I am heartbroken for you dear friend. When I read this at Mitch & Mollie's I couldn't believe it and came right here. I wish it wasn't so. I know how devastated you are! She brought you such happiness for such a short while; I think this is every mama's worst nightmare. There aren't words to ease your pain but know many are thinking of you and sending love.

  26. Over from Furry Bottoms... it's always painful to lose a dear pet - or hear about someone that has lost theirs...

Zoie could really jump - She must have been amazing. Thoughts and prayers for those on this side of the rainbow bridge.

  27. Oh Dear Fern, that is so sad and we send you and Tom gentle hugs. Please don't blame yourself. Poor Zoie was a jumper. You couldn't do anything about that. You gave her the best life with all your love and affection. Run free at the Rainbow Bridge Zoie. You will be welcomed with open paws and love. Fern, we will still keep in touch even if you don't blog. You are a lovely caring woman. Take care and love to you both. No worries, and love, Carol

  28. I know you are devastated about Zoie. Try to get over your guilt. It wasn't your fault. Think more about the good life you gave her. I too struggled with the what-ifs-when we had to put our black lab down last year. By the time we discovered she had liver cancer....it was too late. She died 2 weeks later. We should have seen the changes in her behavior. I know your pain and am sad this happened to you. Wishing you Peace.

  33. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Years and years ago I lost my little Chihuahua to the road and it was like the world was ending. But friends kept telling me that God had a very important job for "Bambi" at the Bridge and needed her back. This brought some comfort although I'll never forget little Bambi even though it's been nearly 40 years now.

God had an important job for Zoie too. She will always be safe within your heart until you're together again.

  43. Oh shit Fern, this isn't good at all. I was worried that this would happen. We know that the main highway isn't that far away and unfortunately the risk that Zoie would venture that way was always there. I'm not sure whether you going out after her shortly after she first went missing would have changed anything. It's too easy to blame yourself for what happened. You'll need to cry this one out Fern. There's no other way. We're very sorry. We do know that Zoie loved her time with you because it was probably the best that she ever had.We don't know what else to say but to wish you peace.

  50. Dearest Fern,
I am so deeply sorry to hear about sweet Zoie. I am sending lots of mournful howls to the heavens in her honor. Please don't blame yourself, I think Zoie was such a free spirit that she just couldn't stay in her fence and longed to run. Now that she's an angel, she can leap and play and run forever...no fences and tons of love flowing to her from all of us and the many other angels she is surrounded by now. Sending warm vibes and love to you and your husband.

  55. Came here from Molly and Mitch....

I am sorry for your devastating loss....

I too am in mourning; i lost my precious cat last MOnday.......

I too am going over and over things, what should I have done? what did I do wrong? straining with sobs to try to turn back the clock. But it won't turn.

I can only say that I feel your heartache, your heartbreak. We must not go over and over things, I know, everyone says, but it is hard...

Let us both hold on to the thought that our loved ones are somewhere, that they still *ARE*, and that we will see them run towards again one day, and be able to hold them again.

Till time takes some of the pain, try to take it one day, one hour, one moment at a time. And be kind to yourself, as Zoie would be kind to you. Zoie does not blame you.
