Tinker was on death row

So many of you have said that Tinker was not a good fit for us. That the rescue people should have done a better job matching us up. Well they didn't match us up at all. I was talking to Angela a girl in the rescue group and telling her about what I liked in dogs. Sight Hounds!!!!!! She said that one of her girls from the rescue was at a high kill kennel about 125 miles west of Tallahassee right then and there was this super cute dog there set to be put to sleep that afternoon. The girl told Angela she wished she could bring Tinker home with this other dog, she had gone there for, Tinker was so cute. I told Angela I would foster Tinker so it would save her life. The rescue group didn't know anything at all about Tinker except she was a female and cute. The girl that had picked up Tinker from the kennel said she thought she was a year or two old. They took Tinker to the vets when they got back in town and the vets gave her some shots and checked for heart worms (she had none). The vets said she had never come in season. Which meant she was not a year old!!! Tinker had been picked up by a dog catcher as a stray. That was all they knew about her. She was picked up on a Friday by the rescue and she stayed at the vets over the week-end and brought to me on a Monday afternoon. They didn't know anything really about her at all.
I didn't know anything about her!!! We learned!!!!

Love coming your way, Happy & Fern

  1. Hi Fern, we keep checking for your posts (in between doing real work) to see how you're doing. The one thing that is clear, is that you opened up your heart and your home to save a dog. You tried to the best of your ability but it was clear that Tinker needed more help. You did your best. Now we all need to hope that Tinker gets the additional help she needs in another loving home.

  3. Fern, I'm so sorry you had to give Tinker up but in the short amount of time you had her, you might have saved her life. I know how hard it is with a large young pup. Ivy drives me crazy some days - and she is outside all the time. She has never left our farm and stays really close to the house, but she does like to bite and scratch. I have found that she is afraid of a plastic bottle with a few pennies in it. All I have to do is shake it and she calms down. Since I found this out, it has helped a lot. Maybe the rescue can place a more appropriate dog with you.

  5. Fern, I've been involved in rescue for many years, and can tell you first hand that things happen for a reason--Your getting Fern was for a reason, her leaving you at this time is no doubt for another. We'll keep her in our prayers that she continues to find her way to her forever home! Let us know if you hear, okay?

  7. Hi Fern, I agree with all the other comments-you did your very best for Tinker and you tried. She is lucky she wasn't hit by a car or gotten out. Sometimes those dogs that were strays have learned to run and it isn't easy to change those behaviors. I know there is a better match for you out there.
P.S. You mentioned you can't read my blog-I think this happened to you last year too because the background is dark brown and the writing is white-so that you can read it. So sorry, it will be gone before the holidays. You can always email me too.

  8. Awww...I'm sorry things didn't work out with Tinker. I know you're prolly sad but you did the absolute best you could. She was lucky that she was able to live with you for a little while. My mom says that sometimes pets just have a few rest stops on the way to finding their perfect family. So you did something most wonderful for Tinker by giving her a place to rest for a little while on her journey.

I know you'll find a doggie that's the absolute PAWFECT match for your home and your heart!

  11. Hi Fern, you did save Tinker from death row and gave her more time. Sometimes life hurts, but we take the good with the bad and get on with it. Now she will hopefully find a forever home and get the help she obviously needed. I hope there is a doggie heading towards you soon. Take care. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  12. Yes, a hard lesson learned, but you get big hugs from everybody for saving her little life! Maybe she will go to a new home now and get some obedience training. I bet there is a cutie for you just waiting!

  13. You have some good friends with wise words, I don't think I can add to anything that has already been said.
Tinker will find a home and there is a dog out there for you, when the time is right you will have a four legged friend back in your life.

  16. You did the best that you possibly could to get Tinker adapted to her new life with you but it was just not meant to be. We can only hope she will find the right home soon.

  17. Fern we are sorry to read about Tinker. We know you tried very hard to teach her how to be sweet and showed her lots of TLC...but you cannot have a biter for your own safety and for those who might come to your house.

  18. I'm so sorry, Fern, that Tinker didn't work out. It sounds like she has some deep-seated problems even though you and Tom gave her a chance at a good life. I hope she's able to overcome her challenges and finds another home. In the meanwhile, keep looking. The right one will come along soon--I just know it!
