Oh Tinker, Tinker, Tinker

Hi Blogville, let me be more clear!!! Tinker is digging out of the fenced in part of the yard that is 2 and a half acres of wooded land that is fenced in. There is really very little of the land that is not all trees!! We have no part of our 3 acres that gets full sun any time of the year. That makes it hard to garden on!!! Anyway she really isn't digging out to run away, she is just exploring and the fence gets in her way. That is way as soon as I call her she comes right back. I am afraid that one day she will meet something or someone that will in some way hurt her out there. Or she finds her way to the road that is a 6 lane highway.
I have had this fence for 36 years and have had lots of dogs and she is the only one who has ever dug out !!!!! The only one!!!!
If I have to have her on a lead all the time, if I can't let her go out to do her business when I am busy doing something else, I'll let her go back to the rescue!!!! It will kill me but we paid so much for this fence so that you could just let the dog out!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has worked for 36 years--- now we have a head strong digger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you all have a good weekend!! It is suppose to be a little cooler but with no rain and we haven't had any real rain since Lee came through. WE NEED RAIN
Love coming your way, Tinker & Fern

  1. Hi Fern, we understand your concern but Tinker can't go back to Rescue. We'll just have to think of something else to do about her digging and possibly getting out. How about a "long line" attached to her collar when she goes out. A long line could be made out of clothes line wire or perhaps something that Tom has in the shed. We like Tinker and we like you. And we hope that you both stay together.

  2. Hi Fern, I agree with Sam about using a long lead or chain so she can't get as far as the fence. Maybe an electric fence would work too but that would be more expensive. Good luck.

  3. I know that some dogs just have this natural urge to dig, but I also think that some dogs dig because they're bored. Have you tried to play a game with her when she's out in the yard. Does Tinker like to retrieve, or maybe chase a frisbee? Find something that she loves to do, or teach her a new game and hopefully it'll get her mind off of digging to China! xxoo

  4. We discovered our dogs wouldn't dig again in a hole when we placed their own droppings in it and then covered it up. You might try it.

  5. You can also get her somewhere where she can dig.. my daddies got me a sandpit and I love digging in there and finding treats and toys :D

  6. OH my. Well, I guess that you are seeing Tinker's Inner DACHSHUND. My mom says that EVERY SINGLE one that she knows of... DIGS. Angel Pretzel... dug up Dandelions... Every single one she came upon...
I agree with LUNA.. a nice.. special place to DIG... might be the answer.

  7. Oh Tinker, don't be a stinker. Stop your digging you little rascal. We heard the one about droppings in the recently dug hole too. Don't know if it works or not. Does she dig if she has a big marrow bone to chew on when outside? Will try and think up some more ideas. Take care. No worries (we hope) and love, Carol (and Stella and Rory)

  8. Tinker must have Terrier in her! We'd love to help her dig!
Our mom would use a tie out just to be on the safe side.

    Love ya lots,

  9. Oh dear I so hope that Tinker does not get to go back to the shelter. There must be a way around this. Some of the others suggested a lond line so that he cant escape but can get around, that sound good. Hope you sort it soon.. Hugs GJ xx

  10. I won't give up on Tinker, Fern. Like you said, she isn't trying to run away but just curious as to what is beyond the fence. Maybe more playtime to burn off her excess energy might help?

  11. Fern
dont give up and send her back. Maybe if you are letting her out while you are busy inside put her on a lead and when you are outside with her, let her run and play. She is still just the puppy stage. Mom has to watch Addy cuz she digs too.

  12. Ugh, I have to confess that I've dug out a couple of times too, but we have tiny yard and it wasn't too hard to fix. Mom lets me dig in one place--sorta like my own sandbox--and that helps. I haven't tried lately, but I'm almost 2 now. I wonder if getting older helps.

Hang in there, Fern. It does get better.

  14. Have patience Fern and find a happy medium...maybe do what Jazzi said, keep her on a very long lead when you can't keep your eye on her and when you can watch, just let her run. Don't send her back.

  15. How frustrating! I hope Tinker gets over her digging soon. We need rain, too. Cooler temps have arrived, but no rain yet.

  16. I LOVE to dig! I like the idea of giving her a safe place to dig way INSIDE of the fenced in area. My family lets me dig (only when they say it's OK) in one spot on the back side of the pool in the backyard. Also, the grass is really tall all around the perimeter of the yard near the fences, so I can't even really dig near it even if I wanted to. Have you thought about planting stuff along the fence line? ;)

    Woofs & hugs, <3
